My wife and I bought a home in Pagosa Springs in 2005 as a
second home. We have close friends who have had a second home here since 2000
and highly recommended we come here. We are so glad we did. On average, we have
spent 2-3 months here a year. Although our primary home is out of state, we
consider ourselves Pagosans and are proud to do so. We have spent tens of
thousands of dollars furnishing our house from local businesses. We’ve had
dozens and dozens of friends and relatives visit with us or come out on their
own. Since 2014, we began renting our home out when we weren’t here. Although
concerned about the impact this would have on our home, we found that we have
taken better care of our home both inside and out due to our desire to make
this a first class rental experience. We have spent additional thousands of
dollars to upgrade our home for rental purposes. Team Pagosa has been
outstanding in their insistence on quality control as well. We have had zero
problems. I can’t begin to count the tens of thousands of dollars spent by our
guests in local businesses; restaurants, Wolf Creek Skiing, golf, trail rides,
balloon trips, souvenirs, hot springs, etc. Multiply this by hundreds of homes
just like ours and you get a thriving economy which the local, full-time residents rely on to take care of their families.
Pagosa Springs has always been a short-term tourist-based economy supported
primarily by the short-term home rental due to a lack of hotel space. Pagosa
Springs has made substantial progress in the last few years and needs to keep
moving forward, not backward This is 2018, not 1958. We urge the leadership of
Archuleta County to resist the small-minded interests of the few, to protect
the long term interests of the majority.
Sincerely Proud Pagosans,
Chuck and Janet Chillingworth
